Please welcome Dr. Hope Mogale to the Computer Science department at University of Pretoria. He has joined our team as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pretoria. This role is supported by Microsoft Research Africa, UP & DSFSI.
Dr. Mogale holds a PhD in Computer Science, completed in 2019. His research focuses on Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with specific expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and advanced computing architectures such as ASICs and FPGAs. He is also working on advancing Parallel Deep Neural Networks.
Dr. Mogale’s current research is centered on low-resource African languages, investigating approaches for developing language models and embeddings suitable for these contexts. His work applies methods such as self-supervised learning and general AI to address the challenges faced by low-resource languages. Additionally, he is exploring new computing architectures and hardware-guided machine learning to develop systems tailored for data-intensive NLP tasks relevant to African languages.
Prior to joining our team, Dr. Mogale served as a Senior Research Engineer at CSIR, where he developed expertise in optimizing neural networks, parallel programming, and distributed computing. His current objective is to apply cutting-edge AI technologies to address the digital language divide and improve access for speakers of less-resourced languages in Africa.
